The black rider felt the girl beside him shiver. He looked out through the cracks and watched the creature slam the door. The girl fidgeted, but it was not time to emerge. Geneeva stayed at the window, watching. “He goes to the stable,” she muttered, just loud enough for them all to hear.
“I properly secured and hid the trap door,” said Gangar absentmindedly. He sat as if listening, waiting for something. “He won’t find the horses.”
No one moved for several minutes. All was quiet. Aritka began to feel very stiff standing between two walls. The baby fidgeted, fussed, and began to complain. Beside her, Aritka felt the black rider go stiff. “Now is not the time,” he entreated her roughly.
Aritka frantically tried bouncing her. She rocked her and offered her knuckle. The child wouldn’t be contented. “She won’t settle!” Aritka said anxiously.
